Lean Six Sigma at Berkeley: Empowering Campus Excellence
At the Business Process Management Office (BPMO), we are committed to driving operational excellence across campus by equipping individuals with the tools and methodologies needed to improve processes, increase efficiency, and reduce waste. Through our Lean Six Sigma training, we help individuals across campus develop the skills needed to foster a culture of continuous improvement, ensuring that Berkeley remains at the forefront of innovation and service excellence.
Why Lean Six Sigma Matters at UC Berkeley
Lean Six Sigma empowers individuals to take a proactive approach to problem-solving, allowing them to identify inefficiencies and deliver measurable improvements in their day-to-day work. By embedding Lean Six Sigma principles into our operations, Berkeley can continuously evolve, meet the needs of our students, faculty, and staff, and operate with high levels of efficiency.

Lean Six Sigma YELLOW BELT Training
Our Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt program is designed for anyone at UC Berkeley (CalNet ID required) who wants to actively contribute to improving how the university functions. This program provides the foundation you need to apply Lean Six Sigma methodologies to streamline processes and solve problems in your area.
What You'll Learn:
- Core Lean Six Sigma Principles: Understand the fundamentals of Lean (waste elimination) and Six Sigma (reducing variation) to enhance efficiency and process quality.
- Hands-On Process Improvement: Gain practical skills for mapping workflows, identifying process bottlenecks, and improving service delivery.
- Problem-Solving Tools: Learn to use essential Lean Six Sigma tools such as the 5 Whys, Cause-and-Effect diagrams, and Process Mapping to drive improvements in your department.
- Continuous Improvement Culture: Discover how Lean Six Sigma can help you create a culture of continuous improvement, where small, incremental changes lead to significant, lasting impact.
Who Should Attend
Lean Six Sigma (LSS) Yellow Belt training is open to all individuals at UC Berkeley who are interested in or involved in process improvements. Regardless of what department you're part of, this program provides the skills you need to optimize workflows and create efficiencies within your unit.

Lean Six Sigma GREEN BELT Training
As a Green Belt, you will develop the expertise to reduce operational costs, improve process efficiencies, and enhance customer satisfaction. This training equips you with a broad range of Lean Six Sigma tools and methodologies, ensuring that you not only know the concepts but can effectively apply them in real-world scenarios.
To bridge the gap between theory and practice, our comprehensive Green Belt program includes a hands-on project and spans 3 to 4 months. This intensive approach is designed with one goal in mind: to develop you into a skilled Lean Six Sigma practitioner. As you progress through each phase of your project, your understanding of Lean Six Sigma principles will deepen, ultimately preparing you to lead process improvement initiatives with confidence.
What You'll Learn:
- Understand the Lean Six Sigma philosophy and apply it within your working environment
- Optimize processes using the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) structure
- Identify and prioritize customer requirements
- Recognize opportunities for process improvement and select impactful projects
- Analyze problems systematically and determine root causes
- Develop and implement sustainable, data-driven solutions
Program Structure:
The course consists of six classroom sessions over two weeks, incorporating interactive learning methods such as simulations, exercises, and discussions. After completing the classroom training, you will lead a project under the guidance of a Business Process Management coach. The project typically takes 3 to 4 months to complete and is designed to deliver measurable improvements.
By applying Lean Six Sigma principles in a real-world setting, your project will drive cost savings, efficiency gains, and performance improvements—benefiting both your department and the broader campus community.
