Investing in sustainability-focused infrastructure upgrades will allow Berkeley to maintain regulatory compliance, reinforce its global standing as a climate leader, and proactively address deferred maintenance — all while enhancing campus safety and public health, reducing carbon emissions, and strengthening our appeal to students, researchers, and corporate partners.

Problem Statement

UC Berkeley must build and maintain an efficient, resilient campus that helps the university adapt to a changing climate; enables the entire campus community to thrive, learn, research, and work; and supports the university’s status as a leading public institution in the world.

Objectives

  • Create a concrete and actionable plan for campus to advance our goals toward greenhouse gas reduction and infrastructure resilience, and stakeholder engagement
  • Actionable plan for reference, accessible, aesthetically engaging and as easy to read as possible
  • Bring in a broad reach of stakeholders to contribute to the plan review within the timeframe (Dec ‘25)

Success Metrics

  • Climate Action Plan is received and approved by UCOP by June 2026
  • Active stakeholder engagement and adoption
  • Recommendation for implementing key aspects of the plan are incorporated into other strategic plans across campus by June ‘26
